Why do we hiccup?

???

You ask: Why hiccup happen?

Deep in Caveman belly sit big flat muscle — the diaphragm. It pull down so lungs suck air, push up so air leave. Sometimes this muscle get jumpy and jerk sudden, no warning. Fast jerk yank air in quick — then little flap door at top of throat slam shut. That slam make the 'hic'! Caveman eat too fast, gulp air, drink fizzy river water, belly stretch big — the nerve running to muscle get poked, muscle twitch. Why body do such dumb twitch at all? Science tribe not fully sure. Some say leftover reflex from long-ago fish-frog kin, or from when baby Caveman suckle. Hiccup near always pass quick, but one poor man hiccup sixty-eight winters without stop — longest ever known! Cave wisdom: hiccup just belly-muscle trip over own feet, and throat door slam behind it.
